Instructional Design: Digital Media, New Tools, and Technology

Week One:Digital Media Checklist

Summary About the Checklist

The MEAL systems OER available in Open University has been evaluated by check lists to select and to ensure very relevant and quality resources for my mini course on MEAL framework for English Programmes. Total of eight (8) criteria are employed, including Relevance, Accessibility, Accuracy, Production Quality, Interactivity, Alternative version, Audience and Copyright information. The yes/no and a remark section are made for all criterions in order that evaluators can put an options and further explanations. Using selection criterions helped me to critically evaluate the OERs and to make informed decisions about their suitability and quality for my mini course. It also helped me to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the OER and to suggest possible improvements or adaptations. I think the checklist is a useful tool for anyone who wants to use OER for learning or teaching. Below are blank evaluation check-lists.

Evaluation of Open University OERs

The Open University’s OER is very invaluable, relevant, and helpful material for my mini course on MEAL framework for English Programmes in British Council pursuant of the evaluation criteria I employed. It offers accessible content in various formats for different learners. It caters to diverse audiences especially development and humanitarian response actors. The OER available in Open University web site   contains resources directly very relevant and helpful contents for my mini course training. It engages learners to be engaged in interactive sessions and has stimulating contents. It delivers high-quality content that is clear, accurate, and current. It uses a Creative Commons license that permits access, use, modification, and sharing of its content. The OER contents are very related with my Modules of MEAL minicourse training, and I used Open University’s OER as one of the best resources for my minicourse training audiences. Below is detail evaluation completed for OER.

Week Two:Digital Document and Checklist

The Digital Document

This digital document on Accountability mechanisms for MEAL system was created by using Canva design which can be used for free of charge for both commercial or non commercial uses. The digital document then supplements  my minicourse Module…of MEAL framework, and addresses the needs of English Programmes training audiences. So that, the document aims to present necessary accountability steps/mechanisms  for MEAL system of English Programmes in British Council .

While producing  this digital document, I tried to keep in mind the basic principles of graphic design (contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity) and UDL by combining visuals with text.Below is the PDF of digital document.

In addition,I have used the checklist created in week 1 for digital document or  OER evaluation of week2 and adjusted to my minicourse .See below.

Week Three:Digital Images

Reflection/Summary on Mini-Course Brochure

How does the image fit within your minicourse? If used as part of a module, which learning objective(s) does it align with?

I decided to to design the digital brochure for my mini-course on MEAL framework. Therefore, the brochure addresses or touches all my learning objectives. It is created as an information for training audiences.

What are your ideas for meeting digital design standards?

During the brochure design, I considered visual design principles such as color, hierarchy, contrast, emphasis, repetition and balance. I created contrast by using a blue textured background brought from vector stock with black text for first page ,and white & green colors background from Canva for second page. However,I did not add the Alt text in the brochure, because my min-course training audiences need  no Alt text.

What was your thought process behind your brochure design?

I decided to create a digital brochure which would serve as an information for training audiences, and I also thought to ensure that the brochure design and images I used will engage  them actively.

I have created this brochure by using Canva App by combining both vectors stock and canva’s  images. Both digital images are licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.    Below is the Mini-course Brochure and Digital Checklist

WEEK Four:Video Tools and Accessibility Requirements

Reflections

For week 4 Course Activity assignment, I decided to introduce my MEAL framework Minicourse Modules to training audiences. So that the video tool aims to address my minicourse training modules and is directly relevant to training audiences. To produce the video tool, I used Microsoft office 365 PPT, and then exported to video format. Finally, the video tool is uploaded and published on you tube at https://youtu.be/7n8KPtOow00 .

In short, the video provides an overview of MEAL framework Minicourse Modules for training participants.

From an accessibility perspective, I tried to employ the following:

  • By using youtube I managed to add closed captions in fact editing is needed to clean up sentence structure and grammars.

  • Made the modules contents simple, I tried to make text/font sizes large, colors visible/readable enough to training participants.

  • I also tried to maintain a high-contrast ratio throughout to ensure the video-maintained visibility for any viewer.

Furthermore, I aimed to use a lot of contrast and emphasized key parts of the video by using visuals, cursor pointer as well as audio to enhance accessibility.

To create the video, I employed the following process:

  1. I started drafting a high-level storyboard to get a better sense of the content.

  2. To ensure the accessibility requirement, the closed captions are added by using a you tube as well..

  3. I used PowerPoint for the "demonstration" portion of the video and recorded my screen action using lap top’s (Lenovo) screen recording functionality.

  4. Finally exported to video format and published it to you tube.

Overall, despite I came back to course week assignments uploading lately due to my engagement on foreseen family matters, I loved the week's assignment, it’s engaging, it requires to see diverse perspectives while creating a educational video tool.

Week Five:Screencast or Animation Video

Reflection

For week 5 activity, I created a screencast on concepts and introduction of MEAL framework to the training participants. The introduction of MEAL framework screencast presented to participants is directly linked to my minicourse of Module 1 and learning objectives 1 and 2.To produce this screencast tool, I used edge clipchamp, and then exported to video format. Finally, the video tool is uploaded and published on you tube at https: //youtu.be/HFjyLhi1u0 .

In short, the screencast provides an introduction on the MEAL framework for training participants.

From an accessibility perspective, I tried to employ the following:

  • By using youtube I managed to add closed captions in fact editing is needed to clean up sentence structure and grammars.

  • I also tried to maintain a high-contrast ratio throughout to ensure the video-maintained visibility for any viewer.

  • There is also screen texting on major areas of the MEAL framework thought editing required still.

To create the video, I employed the following process:

  1. I started drafting a high-level storyboard to get a better sense of the content.

  2. I created the bulk of the video using Lenovo laptop.

  3. I used edge Clipchamp for the "demonstration" portion of the video and recorded my screen action using laptop’s (Lenovo) screen recording functionality.

  4. Finally exported to video format and published it to you tube.

Overall, despite I came back to course week assignments uploading lately due to my engagement on foreseen family matters, I loved the week's assignment, it’s engaging, it requires to see diverse perspectives, it requires practice for beginners while creating an educational screencast tool.

Week Six: Interactive Module Storyboards

Reflections

I managed to create the Week 6 activity entitled " Concept, Importance, and Implementation of MEAL Framework”. I employed Microsoft office word to create the week6 storyboard. I used a MS Word because it is not time taking, it’s simple and accessible for content creation.

My week 6 interactive module storyboard directly fits with CLO1 and directly fits with course learning objectives 1 & 2.

I learned a lot from the process of producing the storyboard, it gave me an opportunity to think different perspectives during development of the storyboard. As instructional designer, there are various perspectives to be considered such as the accessibility and inclusivity issues.

The course learning outcome and learning objectives alignment is one the areas that I learned a lot form the storyboarding development process.

In sum, during the development of storyboard I tried to cautious of in terms of content alignment and timeline to achieve. It also helped me avoid the extraneous load and provides a clear understanding to the developer regarding the content.

Week Seven:Interactive Module via Authoring Tool

Reflections

The Basic Concepts,Importance,Design and Implementing Module is the first Module of the 4  MEAL Framework Modules for Minicourse. The first two Learning Objectives are covered in the Module 1 they are:

  1. LO1-Differentiate the monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning terminologies and discuss when to do the M&E.

  2. LO2-Identify different types of MEAL framework significances for English Programmes.

From Module 1 sections, the first two sections include Introduction basics and concepts on monitoring, evaluation, accountability & learning, and importance of MEAL framework for English Programmes are covered .The session will take 45 minutes to complete. The remaining one section to be completed later on.

As the learners complete the module’s sessions, they are asked to participate in knowledge checks as summative assessment of the minicourse ,and to learn as how they are processing the information, and  to gauge their learning from the module sessions.

As far as accessibility features are concerned, closed captions, alt text for images, text that is easy to read, avoidance of fast-flashing content, and good color contrast are employed.

The authoring tool that I employed is iSeazy, this is because this authoring tool  has a free version, and it is a very simple to use,to edit, and it is also web based which is very helpful, and widely used for instructional designers in education sector, corporate and development organizations.

However, a free version iSeazy has no an undo option to main while a mistake is made during development.

One of the challenges I encountered was uploading or inserting audios and videos by using free version iSeazy. But still I am very encouraged to use other authoring tools such as Adobe Captivate for my Instructional design as well.
